Hikers, equestrians, trail runners and more will be able to enjoy the extensive network of hiking and the multi-use trails found at the William B. Umstead State park. There are trailheads available on both sides of the park. Visitors can follow them around the three manmade lakes that within the park.

These lakes are an excellent for fishing and the boat launch is perfect for kayaks and other small watercraft that visitors can bring with them. At both sides of the park, there are picnic grounds and fireplaces that can be reserved.

Nonprofit groups and other organizations can enjoy the group campsites that are available for them to use, as well as two group camps with cabins, a washhouse, mess halls and more. The Historic Maple Hill Lodge is reservable for any overnight gathering you would like to plan. The tent campground is open throughout the summer.

Activities Allowed in the Park

The William B. Umstead State Park provides many great activities for everyone to enjoy. No matter how you like to spend your time outside, this park provides water, trails, playgrounds and more to make it happen. Some of the activities that visitors can enjoy about the park include:

Visitors can also reserve camping spots throughout the park to extend their stay and enjoy more of the fun.

Scheduled Events

This park provides a number of learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. Many of these are led by the park rangers and are designed to help the public gain a new perspective into what makes the state parks of North Carolina so wonderful. Many of these events are free, though a pre-registration is appreciated. Some of the scheduled events at the park include:

The Trails

This park provides more than 20 miles of hiking trails for visitors to choose. Whether you would like to take a short stroll to wear out the kids or a long hike through the woods, this park has the right options for you.

For visitors who prefer to bike or ride on a horse through the park, William B. Umstead State Park provides 13 miles of multiuse trails. These trails take you through some of the most scenic and secluded parts of the park. Horses and bikes must be kept on these multiuse trails and they will not be allowed into some of the other parts of the park. All equestrians must check in at the Visitor Center before they hit the trails.
